Butterfly Gardens of Saugeen Shores, formed in the fall of 2014, consisted of 3 executive members and many community volunteers. The three founding members are:
Melitta Smole enjoys being actively engaged with her surroundings and spiritually connected with nature. Outdoor activities include herb and backyard gardening, birding, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, biking, hiking, skating, skiing, snowshoeing and curling. She is a board member of the Southampton Curling Club and is a founding member of the Butterfly Gardens of Saugeen Shores. Her creativity is expressed through writing and singing songs, playing the guitar and blending herbs harvested from her garden in her recipes.
Kerry Jarvis is a naturalist who enjoys exploring and discovering the natural world. He is a photographer, author, presenter, gardener and traveller. His images have won numerous awards and have appeared in a variety of web sites and publications, including the cover shot for “Butterflies of Toronto”. Kerry free-lances as a photographer shooting events for clients throughout the province.
Kerry and his wife Melitta are passionate about monarch butterflies. They have led many workshops and presentations on Monarchs and butterfly gardening. They tag monarchs and several of their tagged monarchs have been recovered in Mexico. Kerry is a founding member of the Butterfly Gardens of Saugeen Shores.
As a long-time naturalist it is Stew’s belief that each person should do what they can to support the local community and that the environment must be a primary focus.
He is a member of the Owen Sound Field Naturalists, Southampton Rotary Club, and Friends of MacGreogor Provincial Park. He was the Coordinator of the Piping Plover Recovery Project (2007 – 2011).
Stew is the Director for Swim Ontario Huronia Region and he is a meet referee for local and external swim meets. He is a founding member of the Butterfly Gardens of Saugeen Shores and a long-term supporter and fundraiser for the Bluewater District Outdoor Education Centre. Stew has 31 years experience as an educator with the Bluewater District School Board and is the president of Synergistic Solutions – a consulting company that presents workshops throughout Ontario.
